The tour was on the grittier end of the Hidden London series of tours, featuring mostly walkways and larger tunnel shafts. The standout ‘view’ is probably when the large tunnel you’re in curves upwards to the surface. Alas I didn’t have a good angle for this so didn’t get any good photos.

View all 6 photos →

Built in 1895, it’s now just a shell of decaying concrete and rebar. Anyone who knows me will know I can’t resist some decay and concrete.

You can only get to it during low tide, and even then by walking through quite a bit of mud. I luckily arrived an hour before lwo tide so had plenty of time to explore. Reviews online suggested entering the site was tricky - but a rickety ladder had helpfully been tied to the first floor to aid visitors.

View all 16 photos →

It was really needed – thanks to Chris for inviting me. We went to Yorkshire for a week, hopping over to the Lake District for a day to hike Scafell Pike.

Having not hiked for some months, we of course chose one of the harder routes in to Scafell - via the corridor route. Not wanting to do a repeat journey back, we picked the Great End as a descent. It’s a municipality to the west of Lisbon filled with historic palaces and castles. You can’t visit all in day - so I picked what seemed the two most interesting to me - Pena Palace and the Castle of the Moors.

At Sintra it seemed everyone wanted you to take the bus or taxi to get to Pena. After queueing for 20 minutes with no movement I asked about walking there. I got many not s positive answers ― “a two hour hard hike”. Nonsense! It’s a beautiful 1hr easy hike. Absolutely recommended to walk to Pena.

View all 13 photos →

They eat.

We were no exception.

With thanks to Chris’s foursquare list and our AirBnB host’s home-made pintxo map, we visited more than 20 pintxos bars over 4 says. Lots of great micro-dishes.

I listened to a podcast last year that talked about how people only really remember the first bite of a dish. So you might go for an truly amazing meal - but if you only have one dish you’ll only really remember that first bite. One memory. But if you try several dishes, you’ll have a much richer memory. It ended by recommended sharing more dishes and getting starters over mains - you’ll try more and have more memories of the occasion. Eating pintxos is exactly like this - in an evening you’re having 10-20 different bites. So many more memories.

View all 12 photos →

The museum was quick to go through with a couple cool models. We’d then Descend the north ridge of Stob Bàn to get back to the car.

For once we had relatively little wind and comfortable temperatures. But we’d chosen a route with lots of fresh untrodden snow. The ascent was slow and arduous - foot after foot of soft powder.

View all 14 photos →

Naturally we loved it, and the next year did two trips again, and this year plan another two. A second trip so soon after the first helped us reinforce what we learnt on the course - rather than waiting another year before putting those skills in to practice.

We decided to hire a private guide for the first day - a great investment. We asked our instructor (Tim Oates) to help us progress our skills, learn some ropework, and ideally go some place photogenic. He suggested Fiacaill ridge - a grade II winter climb in the Cairngorms. Not too challenging, but plenty of interest and areas to test our skills.

View all 12 photos →

In theory we had what we needed to be safe - but stepping out on your own that first time is a fair amount more scary in practice.

The night before we reviewed the avalanche forecast and our OS maps and decided on a ‘short’ loop ascending Fiacaill a Choire Chais, and looping west over Stob Coire an t-Sneachda and Cairn Lochan and descending on the west ridge of Coire an Lochain. On paper this looks about 9km - but in reality it felt like so much more. The forecast was for winds - but very little avalanche risk.

View all 23 photos →

I’d done a 5 day mountaineering course at Plas y Brenin the year before (photos still to come), and was interested in what I could do next - both in terms of skills and in pushing my boundaries.

Chris and I are both massively in to hiking and photography, so this seemed like a great way of extending those interests. Last year I visited Westonbirt, this year to Windsor Great park.

Windsor has less maples than other places (or I neglected to find them), but plenty of nice areas to explore. The Savill Garden had a few, as well as a nice greenhouse with pumpkins and other fauna.

View all 10 photos →
